Why Respect is Especially Important Right Now

We are just on the heels on a massive, major election. Here’s why I think it’s especially important to show respect.

First, let’s define respect.

RESPECT: Esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability.

Here’s why you should show respect.

1.Think about how you would feel

How do you feel when someone doesn’t respect your opinion. Most likely, very sad, or angry, or frustrated. I know this sounds clichè, but think about how other people would have that reaction.

2. Freedom

This is huge to me. We in America HAVE the freedom of having an opinion. As much as we take it for granted or don’t always enjoy it, think about this. 57 nations don’t have freedom of speech. That means they could have an opinion but if they say it, they could die. We are thankfully able to have opinions, don’t take that for granted.

3. If you don’t show respect, why should others?

Think about this situation. You are listening to someone share an belief or opinion that you completely disagree with. What do you do? If you say, “NO, that is a terrible opinion, why are you so dumb?” would that go well? No, that person will dislike you, and you will probably not be able to share your opinion. However, if you say something like “Could you tell me more about that and why you believe that? I’m not sure I agree, but I think it’s an interesting perspective.”, that will go so much better.

Thank you for reading this. In your next conversation(s), I hope that you will remember to show respect. Thank you.
